Finom launches its AI Accounting as standalone product: from bookkeeping to Finanzamt, no bank account needed

Finom launched a standalone version of its accounting software in Germany, allowing freelancers and small businesses to use the company’s automated bookkeeping and tax-filing tools without opening a Finom business account.

Users connect existing business bank accounts through PSD2 and access the same accounting engine that has run inside Finom’s business account product since 2025. The standalone product covers receipt capture, transaction categorization, invoicing, tax reporting and direct submission to the Finanzamt. It is free for six months, then 14 euros per month.

The launch targets a segment Finom said is poorly served by both existing accounting software and traditional tax advisors. Company research covering more than 1,000 SMEs and freelancers found that 74% are dissatisfied with their tax advisors, citing cost and outdated methods, and 56% handle tax filings entirely on their own.

“When we launched accounting last year, it was built into our business account — and it worked well for existing customers,” said Kristjan Kaar, CPO of Finom. “But thousands of freelancers told us the same thing: ‘I want your accounting, I don’t really need a new bank account.’ So we removed the wall. The product has to earn the relationship, not the other way around.”

German accounting software currently charges between 11 and 29 euros per month for comparable functionality and typically requires manual transaction categorization, according to Finom. The company said its year-one blended cost of about 7 euros per month sits 36 to 76 % below competitor tiers with equivalent feature sets.

Finom said no major European fintech currently offers accounting without a mandatory banking relationship.

How it works

Users sign up with an email address and legal form. No passport or ID verification is required at sign-up. They then connect one or more existing business bank accounts via PSD2.

The product includes:

  • Automated bookkeeping, with receipt scanning, transaction categorization under SKR, and reconciliation.

  • EÜR, UStVA, GewSt and ZM reports generated automatically and submitted to the Finanzamt through ELSTER, with user approval at each step.

  • An AI assistant that answers tax questions in plain language, flags missing documents and runs pre-deadline filing checks.

  • One-click DATEV export for users working with a Steuerberater.

  • Compliance features, including a GoBD-compliant audit trail and ZUGFeRD e-invoicing.
