The update was carried out in collaboration with renowned transportation system designer Ilya Birman

TBC Uzbekistan, a leading digital banking ecosystem in Central Asia, has successfully implemented a comprehensive update to the navigation system in the Tashkent metro, improving the lives of approximately 163 million passengers who use it every year.

TBC Uzbekistan is part of London-listed TBC Bank Group PLC, whose mission to make people’s lives easier extends beyond digital banking. This project aims to enhance the daily commuting experience for Tashkent’s residents and visitors, by addressing the challenges presented by the outdated and inefficient previous system in operation in the capital of Uzbekistan.

The update, which was launched at the Alisher Navoiy and Paxtakor metro stations, was carried out in collaboration with renowned transportation system designer Ilya Birman. The new navigation scheme features a clear and intuitive system, including the introduction of a comprehensive numbering system for entrances and exits, and a unified colour coding for metro lines. These improvements, carried out via a visual design reflective of Uzbekistan’s unique cultural and architectural identity, aims to make the metro more user-friendly and accessible.

Nodira Shermatova, chief marketing officer at TBC Uzbekistan, commented:  “Creating an urban mobility navigation system is a complex and important undertaking that must balance functionality with visual appeal, ensuring that passengers feel comfortable and oriented throughout their journey. This project is the first major step towards wider improvements of the passenger experience in the Tashkent metro. It highlights TBC’s mission to improve people’s lives, making their daily tasks more convenient and enjoyable across all spheres, even those that extend beyond digital banking.’’

TBC Uzbekistan remains committed to further developing and refining this metro navigation system, with plans for future enhancements to the passenger experience. This project follows other notable CSR work undertaken by TBC, including the collection and digitisation of traditional Uzbek design ornaments into one comprehensive database, making it easier for individuals to incorporate local design elements into their work. Another project, carried out by TBC in collaboration with Uzbekistan’s Arts and Culture Development Foundation, the Tashkent Mayoral Office and Lokals advertising agency, championed the preservation of Tashkent’s historic mosaics on building facades.

TBC Uzbekistan recently announced a record investment.
